Por qué usted aceptó ser coach del equipo de USA? Yo he estado viviendo en el EE.UU. durante casi 2 años trabajando con algnos juniors, jugando un poco menos squash y enfocando durante un tiempo importante al juego de dobles.. Lo que yo he estado extrañando es la oportunidad para trabajar con los jugadores profesionales alto nivel. Esto me da la oportunidad para poner a disposición mi experiencia como jugador profesional e intentar ayudar a que los jugadores actuales mejoren. La oportunidad de trabajar como el coach del Equipo americano llegó en el momento oportuno y estoy muy entusiasmado con las perspectivas y planes para el futuro.
Qué conoce usted sobre el squash en América? Habiendo vivido aquí durante los últimos 2 años, involucrado con los jugadores juniors, jugando en los torneos de PSA aquí durante los últimos 18 años y organizando en los últimos 7 años exhibiciones de squash en compañía de Peter Nicol en Estados Unidos (nosotros hemos visitado aproximadamente 20 ciudades diferentes alrededor del país) Mejor yo preguntaría... qué quiere usted saber sobre el Squash en America?
Cuáles son sus expectativas sobre el Campeonato de Panamericano de México? Yo estoy esperándolo como una nueva experiencia para mí en la posición de coach, motivando el equipo para jugar su mejor squash mejor y que logren las metas que se han propuesto. Pienso que serán 10 días duros de squash y seguramente habrá sacrificio, dolor y alegría por el camino.
Teniendo en cuenta que aún el squash no es un deporte olímpico, cómo observa usted el desarrollo hacia el futuro? Es un viejo interrogante..... Yo pienso hay mucho potencial para la squash en Estados Unidos y el resto del mundo. Es el gran desafío. Contamos con una estructura que extiende de la mano jugadores que lo hacen individualmente y que se reúnen sólo porque les gusta este deporte. Nuestra gente y el juego son nuestra herramienta para mercadear con más creatividad. Extendiendo la palabra y creciendo con el deporte desde dentro son en mi opinión nuestra mejor opción. ¡Construyendo esa base de datos de personas y usando algunos de los elementos generadores del interés en el deporte, tendríamos los fundamentos necesarias para exigir que nosotros estemos en las olimpiadas!!!
Tiene expectativa de volver a jugar como profesional, o su futuro su futuro está en el entrenamiento? ¡Yo me he retirado y he regresado una vez ya.... quién sabe, eso se lo dejo al futuro!!!
Cuál es su opinión sobre el estado real de squash en el mundo? Es una mezcla. Algo bueno, algún malo, caótico en algunos lugares y de bajo nivel en otros.
Quién es el jugador de la actualidad que ustede más admira y por qué? Yo no diría que yo admiro a alguno en particular. Yo tengo respeto por muchos jugadores que han logrado las grandes cosas, como Jahangir Khan, Jonah Barrington, Jansher Khan, Peter Nicol, Rodney Martin, Ross Norman, Geoff Hunt, Hashim Khan para mencionar algunos que están en mi memoria.. Todos han tenido un momento o muchos momentos de grandeza. ¡Hay un detalle, yo tengo que maravillarme de cómo Jahangir pudiera permanecer invicto durante 5 años y medio, ganándole a todos, torneo tras torneo.... Eso es un gran jugador!
Why did you accept to be the US team coach? I have been living in the US now for almost 2 years working with some juniors, playing a little less squash and focusing some time on hardball doubles as well. What I have been missing is the chance to work with professional players at the top level of the game. This gives me the opportunity to pull on my experience from the professional squash scene and try to help the current players improve. The opportunity to work as the US Team coach came at just the right time and I am very excited at the prospects and plans for the future.
What do you know about squash in America? Having lived here for the last 2 years involved at the junior level, played in PSA tournaments here for the last 18 years and for the last 7 years organised exhibition matches accross the whole of the US with Peter Nicol (we have visited about 20 different cities around the country) all I would say is... what do you want to know about Squash in Amercia?
What are your expectations about the Panamerican Championship? I am looking forward to it as a new experience for me in the position of coach, motivating the team to play their best squash and achieving their goals. I think it will be a tough 10 days of squash and I expect there will be sacrifice, pain and joy along the way.
Taking into account that squash isn´t an olimpic sport, how do you think it will develop in the future? The age old question..... I think there is a lot of potential for squash in the US and the rest of the world. Harnessing that is the challenge. A structure which reaches out to the individuals that play and brings them together can only be good for the sport. Our people and the game are our best marketing tool. Spreading the word and growing from within the sport is our best option in my opinion. Building that database of people and using them to generate more interest in the sport would give us the foundation needed to demand that we are in the olympics!!!
Will you ever play squash again, or is your future focused in coaching? I have retired and come back once already.... who knows what the future hides!!!
What´s your opinion on the actual state of squash in the world? Mixed. some good, some bad, chaotic in places and under sold in others.
Who is the squash player you admire the most and why ? I wouldn't say I admire anyone in particular. I have respect for a lot of players who have achieved great things. Players of the likes of Jahangir Khan, Jonah Barrington, Jansher Khan, Peter Nicol, Rodney Martin, Ross Norman, Geoff Hunt, Hashim Khan to name a few off the top of my head. All have had a moment or many moments of greatness. If anything, I have to marvel most at how Jahangir could remain unbeaten for 5 1/2 years, creaming everyone tournament after tournament....what a joker!
